Locking the Character creation for a server? i have never heard of an mmo that did this. is this something that only square does? has anyone heard of this in any other mmo?

i mean i have played Vanguard, Dragon's Prophet, Eq2, Tera, and wow all from launch date and have never seen this happen. i didnt stay more than a few weeks in some of those games, 24hrs in the case of wow.

It happens in various forms at launch of most games. High population servers get locked or they implement a queue system. It almost always clears up after a few days.

Warhammer locked creation of Chaos side races on quite a few servers in the beginning... people wanted to play Chaos more that Order, and so in order to try and balance out sides Mythic locked Chaos out and opened new servers to accommodate people wanting to play that side. It didn't end well.

Also I recall AION locking out Elyos on a couple of servers and granting bonuses to Asmodians to try and balance out sides.... with mixed results.

It normally only happens during launches to stem the flood to certain servers that can get backed up. I know it happened in WoW, and I remember even Warhammer had a few servers they took off the list for 24-48 hours. After that period those servers are available again normally as this helps load balance the backend.

This is never publicized, as it doesn't affect anyone except people locked out from possibly joining their guild/friends.

wow guess i just dont tend to pick the popular servers. seems this happens more often than i thought. well i hope it doesnt happen to me, though i will be waiting for the launch and have a fast net connection so i might get in under whatever wire that gets put up.

A little late to the game on this thread, but never been locked out from a server at a launch either, though like Gawd, I probably just never picked a high pop server. I suppose this is where the time spent in Benchmark/Beta character creation is gonna pay off? Assuming the files will transfer over without a hitch <.<...

When Gilgamesh gets to a very high population count that exceeds all the other NA servers, SE will (most likely) lock the ability to create a character on it for a little while in an attempt to encourage players to create characters on other servers. This lockout will usually last only for a short while.

What Voice Chat program will the guild be using so I can go download it?
