And a new demo video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKcoeH1ijjU
Shows a player home and some gathering and crafting
Very interesting demo. I haven't been following this game too closely. Is this a single-player sandbox RPG, sort of like Skyrim?
Any app, where i can record my game play ?
This is a new MMORPG made by Garriot, the creator of the Ultima series. He did amazing things with Ultima, leading to Ultima Online, the mother of all MMORPGs, which he eventually sold to EA, and EA destroyed it like everything they touch :P
Shroud is a very low budget game that "borrows" some of the sandbox playability from UO and sort of enhaces it. You may say it's like MMO Skyrim, because they use a skill-based system instead of classes and it has similarish graphics.
You can check their Kickstarter here. I used to worship Garriot back in the day, but I'm not too sure about this game after the Tabula Rasa fiasco. He's now asking for money to finance the creation of this game, but he made like 30 million off NCSoft after Tabula Rasa was shut down after launch.
I put a fair amount of funding in this game in anticipation that the old creativity will come out again, especially now that Long is part of the team. I would not berate Garriot too much on the U8/9 and TR failures as in those 3 games corporates suits ran the show and pressured products that were delivered incomplete. Essentially the best of RG was when he had full creative (and resources) control on the products he made, especially at Origin. So in that I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubts.
As for the 30 millions, or whatever $$ he made or has, frankly this is a red erring and has absolutely no bearings on getting a crowd funded project going. By doing the crowd funding, one can see the pent up demand, judge the likely hood of success and actively work with the funders to do the project. If anything, his personal fortune might come in handy if the project come close to completion and funding run out (and I would be very surprised if he has not put a fair amount of funding already toward this).
The game itself will be an hybrid, where there is a full single player story that can be played in-situ but can also be connected to include only those people you'd like to see to having everyone in your corner of the wood maxed by your connectivity/hardware capability. There is no "shard" server, other than a world server (referee/DM) and the connected game intend to harvest each player own computing resources. The connected game will be in many ways similar to UO minus the open PvP. PvP will be an opt-in flag and if set, filters will ensure that only same are visible. Anyway, lots more at their site at http://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/ for those that could be interested.
As you say, he was on corporate deadlines and under corporate review, let's hope he gets back to his old self and delivers something amazing
I've been following SOTA for a while now, and really liked what they showed us on videos and screenshots, it takes me back to middle school playing UO with my friends. I am just a bit more cautious now about MMOs, since I've bought a lot in the last few years, but not many live up to the hype they generate.
