Moving this to the Chapter Planning forum so we can have a discussion on this :)
I'm curious of people's opinions. I suspect that Q1 2012 might be when we are playing SWTOR, so we'll need to keep that in mind.
I've gone down the Funcom path twice before without very good results.
I love the concepts behind The Secret World, I like Ragnar Tornquist, but I'd be shocked if it hit early 2012.
Stop saying Q1 2012 for TOR Ryan, I've only had one cup of coffee, and I cant contemplate going another year without an MMO!
Actually can I make the "Funcom joke" that yeah, we might be playing it end of Q1, even if it is about 53% done?
Sorry, could not resist!
My bad, I was fixated on Q1 cause that's when everyone says SWTOR is coming out. I actually meant Q3. This is based on the general assumption that there will be a year from when the first beta starts to when the game is actually released, and the word going around that the beta starts in a month or so. And I'm referring to the closed beta that's only gonna have like 100 ppl.
EDIT: I'm definitely joining SWTOR, it's just a question of how long I'll play :P
Even though I'm likely to be disappointed, I'll probably still end up trying this one.
Who knows, maybe 3rd time is the charm for Funcom.
I may try this one. To be honest, I picked up Age of Conan last year during the release of it's expansion and I had a heck of a good time. My account was recently turned back on for it's 3-year Anniversary, and I downloaded it again to give it a go. Pretty much as good as I remembered it, just trying to find a good group to enjoy it with.
I <3 AOC - I am sure I'll give Secret World a try as well.
You forget this is Funcom we're talking about. By the time they go into beta testing the game will have already gone "gold" and what comes out of beta will be just some "minor tweaking".
Seriously though... Anybody else remember the broken zone progression quests that were in Shadowlands so that they had time to finish the content?
I was in AO Beta...then it went "Live", and I use that term very, very loosely...
Basically you would spend about 10 minutes trying to walk across Omni-Ent due to the amazingly extreme suckage levels of lag.
Maybe I just keep trying their games because they have a guy named Ragnar working for them...
I mean, Come on! Is that a cool name, or what?!
Ragnar rocks!
I came back to this thread even though we all know how involved I am in TOR.
I've still got mixed feelings on the title, but I really, and I mean really, hope Funcom hits the ball out of the park on this one. While I love the TOR themepark, I like the direction that Funcom is going, with a classless system, story based, setting. I think it's something that the genre desperately needs. Innovation, even if in this case it is a return to some classic systems with a new twist is a good thing.
I dont know that I'll do launch, but I am pretty confident that this title will be something I pick up down the road and give a whirl, and it's possible one of the few times I'd actually consider two concurrent MMO sub's. Of course I'm holding off on saying that for sure, because I really hope TOR keeps me wrapped up for quite a long time.
Release date announced today:
Guildford, UK. – August 16th, 2011 – World-leading independent game developer Funcom and EA Partners, a division of Electronic Arts Inc., today announced that the highly anticipated modern-day, Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO), The Secret World™ will release for the PC in April 2012. Starting August 26th, gamers can register to join upcoming betas, through a unique interactive social media campaign that will be made available on www.thesecretworld.com.
Imagine a world where secret societies pull the strings of kings and presidents, where vampires are more than just a Hollywood fantasy, and where all the myths, legends and conspiracies are true. The Secret World is an MMO that breaks free from the confinements of character classes and levels and allows players to explore real-world locations with an engrossing storyline. Funcom will not only challenge but redefine long-established MMO standards.
“It has never been more rewarding working on The Secret World than it is now,” says Senior Producer and Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist. “The progress we are making in development allows the whole team to really enjoy just playing the game for hours on end. We are all looking forward to bringing in players through upcoming betas, and their feedback will be crucial to the further development of the game as we progress toward the April 2012 launch.”

You mentioned something about Facebook being required. I guess it is so you can tell your friends all about how you just totally pwned some noobs, bro.
June 19th release date announced.
I've been following this MMO. Looks pretty interesting. I am hoping to get a chance to test it.
I am definitely going to give this title a shot. I think it has great potential and really interesting direction. I am going to be playing TERA for action gameplay and TSW for plot and immersion. We shall see which one I end up enjoying more in the end.
I think this looks pretty neat actually, but with Diablo 3 this summer I don't know if I will be able to play. However, I will definitely give it a go if I get into the beta. I really like the concept!
Edit: Which faction would we want to play should people get beta invites??
If anyone wants to test it out, this weekend might be the time. Gamespot is giving out beta keys for this weekend's open beta only.
